Volunteer Opportunities

What kinds of projects does New York Cares offer?
We offer or provide referrals to thousands of volunteer opportunities throughout the five boroughs, ranging from one-time special events to those requiring a more significant commitment. We work with over 850 nonprofit organizations, and our opportunities span every area from at-risk youth to at-risk animals, the environment to the arts. There really is something for everyone. Learn more

How much time do I have to commit?
It's entirely up to you! Our goal is to make volunteering easy for everyone, regardless of how busy your schedule is. Our projects offer varying commitment levels, so you can volunteer as much or as little as you like.

How old do I have to be?
Volunteers must be at least 18 years old to volunteer on New York Cares calendar projects. However, select projects are Family Friendly. Learn more about Youth Service Opportunities.

How do I sign-up for projects?
Once you have attended orientation, you can visit our Search Projects page and sign-up online.

What is a Team Leader?
Each project has a person who is responsible for managing the project. In most cases, Team Leaders are volunteers who took the extra step to help make our programs possible. Team Leaders may also be representatives from the nonprofit organization hosting the event. Learn more

Who should I contact if I have questions about a project?
The Team Leader should be more than happy to answer any questions you may have. When you sign up, you will receive an automatic email with the Team Leader’s contact information.

Can I bring other people with me to a project?
No. All volunteers must have attended a New York Cares orientation and must register individually for each project they wish to attend.

How do I remove myself from a project I can no longer attend?
Log in, click on "My Projects" and then "De-register." Please do this as early as possible so that another volunteer has the opportunity to take your place.

I'm having problems signing up for projects.
Please make sure that you have logged in. If you have not attended orientation, you will have to do so before you are able to sign up for projects. If you have attended orientation, are logged in, and the project has slots available, simply click “Sign Up.” If you are still having problems, please contact our Volunteer Relations Team at nycares@nycares.org or 212-228-5000.

Can New York Cares verify my hours for school, court or other requirements?
New York Cares is only able to verify hours for projects completed as part of our Calendar Projects Program or Annual Events (hours completed through Community Grapevine projects cannot be verified by New York Cares). You can print a list of your volunteer hours by logging in, selecting “My Projects” then clicking “Project History.” If required, formal letters of verification can be prepared with 7-10 days notice. To request verification of hours, please contact our Volunteer Relations Team at nycares@nycares.org or 212-228-5000.

What if I have an idea for a new project?
Tell us about it! We’re always looking for new projects and people to lead them. Email us at nycares@nycares.org.
