Celebrity New Yorkers Show They Care
This summer, celebrity supporters of New York Cares
- Whoopi Goldberg, Jimmy Smits, and Alec Baldwin - appeared in outdoor and
print ads throughout the city. Our public service campaign was developed
to raise awareness of New York Cares, and encourage more New Yorkers to
support our work in the community. Alec Baldwin said, "I am gratified to
have the opportunity to serve as a spokesperson for New York Cares'
most recent campaign...I urge all New Yorkers to take a look at the efforts
of New York Cares and to support those efforts with their contributions."
New York Cares Day
A HUGE thank you to everyone who participated in the 15th Annual New York Cares
Day! On Saturday, October 21, more than 8,000 caring New Yorkers helped revitalize
117 New York City public schools. In just one day, we were able to paint hundreds
of classrooms and hallways, organize 50 libraries, paint over 350 murals,
and complete so many other important projects for our schools. Thanks to
the hard work of everyone involved, on Monday morning, more than 80,000
children arrived at a school that had been magically transformed into a
wonderful, vibrant place to learn and grow.

An Extreme Makeover for www.nycares.org
After enjoying a love/hate relationship with
our old 'ketchup and mustard' Web site for the past several years, we decided
that it was high time www.nycares.org received a makeover. On February 1st,
we revealed the new and improved www.nycares.org. Although the online project
search and registration tools our volunteers use every day are still here,
and better than ever, the goal was to give the site a cleaner, more contemporary
feel, while making information easier to find. We hope you like the fresh,
new look and would love to know what you think. Please feel free to share
your feedback by emailing nycares@nycares.org.

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2006, New York Cares engaged over 1,500 volunteers in service. Volunteers worked with children to read and learn about the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., and participated in creative projects to explore ways his principles can be applied in their daily lives. 81 sixth grade students from Urban Assembly Academy of Business & Community Development also helped develop a "MLK Day Wall of Dreams" to express their dreams for improving their community in non-violent ways.

Making Winter Wishes Come True
This winter, thanks to the incredible generosity of New
Yorkers, New York Cares was able to help fulfill the holiday wishes of
more than 22,000 disadvantaged kids and families and provide over 6,000
gifts to children in need.
"I would like to extend our most sincere thanks for the wonderful gifts
donated to our agency. Many of our families have limited resources, and
Christmas is often a time of stress and sadness when they are unable to buy
their children gifts. Your presents help ensure that the children had a gift
to open on Christmas Day."
-University Settlement Society of New York
"For many of our students, the thought of having their desired Christmas gift was only a dream. However, through your kind courtesy the dreams became possible. Our students were overwhelmed with the joy of having their new toys."
-PS 993 in Queens
Special thanks to our Sponsor, Gap Inc.
