This is an extraordinary summer for service. President Obama called on Americans to make volunteering part of their daily lives through United We Serve. Mayor Bloomberg's NYC Service initiative is making it easier for New Yorkers to make a difference in their communities, while strengthening the capacity of nonprofits to take on more volunteers. New York Cares is playing a key role in this movement on all fronts.

We have pledged to grow our programs by 20% over the next year to provide more volunteers to help nonprofits, city agencies, and public schools that are struggling to maintain their services. This week, we welcome 12 NYC Civic Corps members to our team to help us reach this goal. This is the largest deployment citywide, made possible through NYC Service. These volunteers will work for us full time over the next year to expand our reach in spite of an economy that might have forced us to keep programming flat. We're grateful for this support, but we will continue to rely on you – as volunteers and donors – to support our goal of helping every New Yorker who needs us.

New York Cares is Most Excellent

New York Cares won first place in the 2009 New York Times Company Nonprofit Excellence Awards. The judges recognized our strengths in financial management, communications, human resources, technology, and program development with a $25,000 cash prize and an awards ceremony held at the Times Center.

There are over 10,000 nonprofits in New York City, and the judges named New York Cares as the best managed organization. Excellent management is why we can create great volunteer experiences, deliver programs that meet critical social needs, and use every donor dollar for maximum community impact. We share this award with all of our volunteers, donors, and friends who contribute to our success.

Corporate Partners Building a Better City

Summer means service for many New York City corporations, and many of them turn to us to run employee volunteer projects. So far, we've enabled 3,000 employees from 40 companies to give back to their city this summer – and we're not done yet. Here are just a few companies that have made a difference:

A group of Deutsche Bank interns took students from P.S. 140's summer program to PMT Dance Studio, where everyone picked up some new moves. Afterward, they recharged with a pizza lunch.

Seventy Goldman Sachs employees spent five hours revitalizing Tompkins Square Park. They planted rose bushes, mulched, and composted to keep the urban oasis clean and beautiful.

Chanel employees took students from P.S. 64 to the International Center for Photography. Students learned the basics of digital photography, took photos in Bryant Park, and made a book to celebrate their work.
