College Bound: New York Cares and Kaplan's SAT Prep Program
Each year, hundreds of low-income New York City students face the challenge of applying to college. Thanks to New York Cares and Kaplan, free SAT preparation classes make this process a little easier. Tutors work with students for seven months to help them prepare for a brighter future. And sometimes the friendships that form continue to grow long after the scores are in.
Take the case of Patrick and David. Patrick, a New York Cares volunteer, met David at the Washington Irving High School SAT tutorial. David's brothers all led troubled paths, which included incarceration. After working with Patrick to prepare for the SAT, David broke that cycle: he was accepted into Cornell with financial aid.
It's clear that Patrick was more than a tutor. They stayed in touch during David's time at Cornell—Patrick even visited him when he studied abroad. David, who completed his master's degree and now works as an urban planner, recently got married and Patrick was at the wedding. Through the SAT prep program, David gained more than study tips—he gained a mentor and a friend for life.

| New Yorkers Who Care
Our celebrity ad campaign's third season is just winding down. A huge thanks goes out to our New Yorkers Who Care—
Whoopi Goldberg, Alec Baldwin, Jimmy Smits, and Penny Marshall—for helping us make more New Yorkers aware of our work. Look for posters and ads in their final rounds about town.
