Enjoy opera music while assisting residents of a long term elder care
facility with painting projects, sing with seniors, or enjoy music performances
with the blind or visually impaired.
3. Read to Me
Help homeless children increase their love of literature, read with children
of immigrant families while their parents attend English classes or start the
day helping elementary students improve their reading ability.
4. Put your dancing shoes on
Help re-create the dance halls of yesteryear by spending an evening dancing
the night away with seniors, or practice Jazz, Hip Hop, and Modern dance
moves with the children. Volunteers of all dance levels are welcome.
5. Get Sporty
Shoot some hoops, show off your soccer skills, splash around at the pool or
enjoy old school favorites like steal the bacon, as you get sporty with
children from transitional shelters.
6. Take a Walk in the Park
Enjoy the great outdoors as you assist disabled athletes during runs in
Central Park or help walk rescued dogs at a no-kill animal shelter or help
revitalize community parks and gardens.
7. Get Crafty
Help create costumes for performances bringing live theatre to children in
hospitals, encourage children ages 5 - 11 to explore their creativity through
arts and crafts projects or knit or crochet blankets for children affected
by HIV/Aids.
8. Skill Builders
Help recent immigrants and the long-term unemployed join the world of work
through computer tutorials and interview and resume prep workshops, teach
apartment search skills to pregnant teens, help 12 - 17 year olds learn the
ins and outs of video editing or assist teenagers with SAT or Regents exam
preparation.
9. Money, Money, Money
Help low-income adults or at-risk teens break the cycle of poverty by
teaching basic financial skills such as budgeting and careful use of
credit, or put money into the pockets of low-income families by providing
tax preparation assistance.
10. Be a Leader
Join New York Cares corps of committed volunteers who go above and beyond
the call of duty to help make more than 500 volunteer projects happen
throughout the city every month.
