Think you don't know enough about computers to volunteer on one of our computer projects? Think again! If you use a computer at work or at home, even if it's just to surf the net or send email, you can make a significant difference in the lives of your fellow New Yorkers.
Computers are such an integral part of life in today's society that not being able to use one can be detrimental to a person's ability to find and secure a job that pays the bills. By spending a few hours of your time with eager but struggling New Yorkers, you can help them to develop basic computer skills that can have a far reaching impact on the person's ability to build a brighter future for themselves and their families.
For years, participants on our Computer Tutorials projects heard phrases like, "Visit our Web site" and "Email me your résumé," without really knowing what those phrases meant. On these projects, volunteers often have to start by teaching the basics of turning on a computer and using a mouse, but work up to sending emails, formatting résumés and tracking expenses in Excel.
A shared sense of pride comes when clients attach their newly perfected résumés and cover letters to the emails they are sending in response to job postings they found on the Internet or when a grandmother opens an emailed picture of a grandchild she's never seen. On these projects, volunteers, quite literally, open up new worlds.
There are dozens of opportunities every month for you to help disadvantaged New Yorkers develop the computer skills they need to build a better life for themselves and their families. Check out this month's calendar and sign up for a project today.
