Making College Dreams Reality

It is a sad but true statistic that less than 6 out of 10 students who enter high school this September will graduate in 4 years. Thirty percent of these young people will never graduate, placing them at greater risk of ongoing poverty. At New York Cares, we're working hard to help at-risk students beat the odds, and have significantly expanded our Children's Education programs for the coming school year. This fall, volunteers will work with over 700 disadvantaged students through our Kaplan SAT Prep program, helping them improve their chances of working towards a college education.

Photo: High School Student At the start of the school year, some students who enroll in our SAT program doubt their ability to graduate from high school. The idea they could go to college sometimes seems out of reach. Many of them do not know anyone who's taken the SAT, let alone people who went to college. Yet as the weeks pass and they begin improving their test scores, possibilities emerge. Working one-on-one or in small groups with tutors every week, they enhance their test-taking skills, vocabulary, geometry, and most importantly, their confidence. Some students raise their scores by hundreds of points, making it more likely they will be accepted into college, and hopefully accepted into the college of their choice. By becoming an SAT tutor, you can make this kind of lasting impact on a young person's life.

Can you spare 2 hours per week?

With your support, we will give hundreds of underserved young people a better chance of earning a college education this year. More than 300 volunteers are needed for test preparation programs this fall, plus we have a number of Team Leader and Co-Team Leader slots to fill. Being an SAT volunteer is about more than increasing test scores; it's about giving young people a belief in themselves. Just 2 hours per week over the coming school year can transform a student's future. Your commitment shows students that someone believes they've got what it takes, and often, that's all they need.

Please Note: At this time, we are not taking any more volunteers for this project. If you are interested in being placed on a waitlist for next year, please email kaplan.prep@nycares.org.
