Computer Literacy Tips
Computer literacy for many adults is a gateway to the future. These skills will help them advance in their careers, communicate with others and enhance their chance for a better life; for themselves and their families. Please keep in mind the following tips when volunteering on these projects:
Engage the student in the class. Get the students to do the tasks they've learned by themselves with a situation that they can relate to in real life.
Be a friend. Students are some times reluctant to ask questions because they don't want to feel unintelligent, try to make them feel comfortable asking questions.
Encourage students to work on projects and tasks after class. The more time they spend using computers, the more comfortable they will become.
Be patient when a student does not grasp a concept quickly. Try phrasing things another way.
Tell your student that is click-around and try different things. Many of the students do not feel comfortable with computers because they are afraid of breaking them.
Computer usage is often involves tasks that people used to previously do manually; compare the tasks and explain the benefits of using a computer.
