Revitalization Project Tips

Positive and inspiring learning environments play an important role in student success. New York Cares Revitalization projects provide a great way to provide children with positive environments in which to learn and grow. Please keep in mind the following tips when volunteering on these projects:

  • Be comfortable. Wear gloves and closed-toe shoes (work boots or sneakers are best), and comfortable clothes that you won't mind getting dirty or paint-stained.

  • Be aware of your surroundings. Keep an eye out for dangerous debris (i.e. broken glass, sharp objects, etc.)

  • Stay clean. Clean-up is a part of any project. Use drop cloths and rags and remember to tidy your work areas and return all tools to the appropriate place at the end of the day.

  • Stay hydrated. Drink water throughout the day.

  • Use materials wisely. Stir paint to prepare it before pouring it in trays or small pails for use. When painting murals, use mixing sticks to mix different colors in pails. Adding white will lighten any paint color. Never mix different types of paint together (e.g., latex paint can't be mixed with traffic paint).

  • Use a paintbrush to edge areas where rollers can't fit (about a 3" strip out from corners, ceilings or floors).

  • Always ask. Consult your team leader or the main contact if you are unsure about how to perform a task or use a tool.

  • Safety is always important. Ask someone to hold a ladder if you need to climb onto one and pick up tools if you see them lying around
  • Follow instructions. Don't do anything (like paint a wall or draw pictures on the wall) that has not been approved by the school.

  • Paint will wash off skin with soap and water. Mineral spirits are always on hand as well.

  • Have fun.
