Volunteer Stars - May/June 2008

In each issue of this newsletter we will recognize volunteers who stand out for their extra hard work and dedication to volunteering. We call these people Volunteer Stars. This month we are happy to highlight: Gino Ancona, Rayhan Johir, Andrea Vasquez, and En Ci Chen.

Photo:GinoGino Ancona: Gino Ancona is a junior at Newtown High School in Elmhurst, Queens. On May 14, he and his fellow students went to PS 150 in Sunnyside to read Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak to a group of 30 first graders. Though Newtown High had never done such a project, Gino stayed focused and helped the kids have a great time. Gino, thanks for your hard work. You truly are a Volunteer Star!

Photo:RayhanRayhan Johir: Rayhan Johir, a senior at Brooklyn International High School, has been volunteering with New York Cares since his sophomore year. During a recent visit to Momentum AIDS, his participation and high spirits improved the experience for all involved. His insightful questions improved the volunteers' understanding of HIV/AIDS, and he was the first person willing to put on a hairnet and apron to serve the meals. Thanks Rayhan for your commitment. Congratulations on being a Volunteer Star!

Photo:AndreaAndrea Vasquez: Andrea Vasquez, a junior at Mott Hall High School, has exhibited tremendous dedication and passion as a Youth Service volunteer. On the Crime Prevention mural project she exemplified the true essence of service by committing herself 100% to making sure the mural was completed and done well. She took on numerous tasks and was willing to go the extra mile to get the project completed. Andrea, for going above and beyond, you are a Volunteer Star. Thank you!

Photo:En CiEn Ci Chen: En Ci Chen is a senior at the High School for Dual Language and Asian Studies. On a recent service project at the Manhattan Animal Care & Control Shelter, his group walked and played with the dogs and cats. During the project En Ci was very knowledgeable about animal cruelty and ways to help prevent these vicious acts. He interacted well with the animals and made other volunteers who were nervous at first feel more comfortable. His charming personality, leadership skills and dedication to volunteering make him a true Volunteer Star. Kudos En Ci!
